To collect pee you can do it a few ways -
1. If the mare is in a standing stall - don't put in extra shavings or straw for the morning.  Then just collect the pee from the puddle underneath her.
2. Give the mare lots of water and wait for her to pee (this will ensure she'll never pee again :)  )  Collect "mid stream".   Not to often you catch a mare like this - but it does happen.   (You'll never see a peeing mare in the same way again.

Everytime a mare pees at our place she does it to the excited cries of my daughter (who always has a pee bottle on hand when it's collection time)  I've seen her leap fences, trip over water buckets, etc. in an effort to catch the mare in the act :)

3.  Rig up a collection device and attach it to a stable blanket (This is the easiest).

The test itself is very easy to use and comes with full instructions - and if that's not simple enough I am always willing to talk you through it over the phone or by email - but it really is very easy to do.

I have attached a couple of pics of collection devices.  These are home made using some netting (like from onions)  a cutoff juice jug and some string.  Putting a paper towel or absorbent clean cloth in the bottom helps ensure a sample if the bottle should come unhooked you can wring out the paper towel and still have your sample.

The photo shows a large volume of urine collected, but you really only need a very small sample - the amount that fits in a small pill bottle is plenty.

How to estimate the size a horse will grow to:
If you take a fabric measuring tape (seamstress tape) find the middle of the knee ( from the front) and follow the contour of the cannon bone down to the coronet band.  Take that measurement and convert it to hands. Ex 15 1/4 inches will be 15.1 h, 15 1/2 = 15.2h, 15 3/4= 15.3h . This way of measuring  is best done at about 6 months and again at 12 months to get a correct measurement. The hard part is finding the center of the knee.
